Salary: $26.29 - $32.28 Hourly; $4,556.93 - $5,595.20 Monthly; $54,683.20 - $67,142.40 Annually

Job Type: Regular Full-Time
This librarian must be able to work the following schedule: Every other Saturday and Monday and 
Wednesday evenings. Week 1: ST-F (M OFF); Week 2: M-F (ST OFF); Sundays are Over Time and on a rotation basis

The Palo Alto City Library is looking for a dynamic Teen Librarian to be based at the brand new Mitchell Park Library, working with the Youth Services team and Community Teen Center staff to develop engaging teen programming and services. Responsibilities include reestablishing a Teen Advisory Board; creating a strong teen volunteer base at Mitchell Park Library; and working with school and community groups to create engaging collaborative services that support the 41 Developmental Assets.

REPORTS TO: Various Library Managers or Supervisors

SUPERVISES: Non-supervisory position, may monitor and assign work to clerical, temporary, para-professional and volunteer staff.

DEFINITION: Under a minimum of supervision, performs specialized and professional library and clerical activities of average difficulty in a library.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
  • College degree or a combination of related experience and training substantially equivalent to graduation from a college or university; and
  • Two years of relevant full-time library experience. One or more years of advanced training in Library or Information Science may be substituted for experience requirement.


Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will possess a MLIS degree and have experience working with teens in a public library setting, as a librarian, paraprofessional, intern, volunteer, student, etc. Though not required, bilingual skills are preferred. Must possess a thorough knowledge of technology and social media.


Essential Duties:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Performs routine circulation tasks required to directly serve public, including registering and maintaining files of borrowers;
  • interpreting patron accounts and checking in and out library materials via computerized equipment; accepting, payments for fines, bills, fees;
  • assisting patrons with inquiries regarding availability and status of items in collections, and interviewing and assisting users regarding circulation accounts and services.
  • Refers circulation problems to supervisor.
  • Conducts library programs for children and adults;
  • conducts tours and classes.
  • Conducts reference interview and analyzes, interprets and answers inquiries utilizing resource in Palo Alto Libraries as well as other libraries and the community, referring unusual questions to a Senior Librarian or supervisor;
  • assists patrons in use of facility including catalog, indexes, reference books and audio-visual equipment.


Essential Functions:
  • Processes patron requests for materials to and from other Libraries (interlibrary loans) including verification of bibliographic data selecting most efficient source for filling requests using computerized services where appropriate. Maintains all files and records, distributes materials and prepares required State reports.
  • Under direction of Senior Librarian or supervisor, develops, organizes and monitors procedures for circulation and housing of audio-visual and special collections including care of materials, training of temporary staff in maintenance, execution, handling and shelving techniques.
  • Monitors overdue processes for Branch or Children's Library. -Selects and de-selects library materials in one or more subject areas based on knowledge of budget available, collection size, analysis of community past usage patterns and other criteria;
  • processes discarded materials.
  • Recruits, interviews, schedules, trains, initiates and coordinates, work of clerical, paraprofessional, temporary and/or volunteer staff as assigned.
  • Collects, maintains and reports statistical records for a variety of library measures.
  • Performs copy and original cataloging and classification efficiently utilizing online computerized cataloging system; assigns access points for materials;
  • establishes new bibliographic computer records in accordance with recognized standards.
  • Maintains specific library collections and equipment including housing, physical maintenance and arrangement.


Related Functions:
  • Responsible for the library and security of building and safety of patrons and staff in the absence of a Senior Librarian or supervisor.
  • Selects, orders, receives, distributes, stores and inventories supplies; maintains budget accounts for materials ordered.
  • Participates on library, City or cooperative library system committees.
  • Assists public in use of a variety of library equipment.

  • Receives, sorts, distributes library mail in facility.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
