DESCRIPTION
The University of California, Irvine Libraries seeks an
energetic, creative, knowledgeable, and user-oriented Research Librarian for
Teaching, Learning, and Education to lead the development of effective learning
experiences for users; to participate actively in the Libraries’ information
literacy program; and to serve as a liaison to the School of Education.
The successful candidate will be based in the Education and
Outreach Department, and will report directly to the Head of Education and
Outreach.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Research Librarian for Teaching, Learning, and Education
will act as the Libraries’ instructional designer and will serve as a
library-wide resource to help design and provide effective digital and analog
learning experiences for users.
Key responsibilities include:
- Monitor the development of online courses at UC Irvine and actively pursue opportunities to integrate information literacy instruction into those courses.
- Collaborate with library and campus staff and faculty on the design and development of effective and high quality learning materials (effective active learning techniques, tutorials, point of need demonstrations, how-to videos, etc.) that support instruction in information literacy skills and in the use of library resources and services.
- Provide leadership and expertise in the assessment of the effectiveness of the Libraries’ instruction program, in monitoring the implementation of ACRL’s revised Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, and in enhancing the Libraries’ subject based instruction activities.
- Participate in the Libraries’ instruction program for students enrolled in lower-division writing courses and other information literacy initiatives.
- Serve as the library liaison for the School of Education which includes collection management and the provision of specialized reference and instruction.
- Participate in the provision of general reference services.
- Monitor current developments in education research and keep the Libraries apprised of these developments in areas where the research has implications for information literacy and other library instruction programs.
Qualifications
Required:
- Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an equivalent combination of relevant advanced degree and library experience.
- Experience designing and creating tutorials, learning objects, or other curricular resources.
- At least two years of successful teaching experience.
- Strong interest in instruction, information literacy, and assessment of library services and resources.
- Familiarity with ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
- Commitment to user-centered library services.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively and to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within the UCI Libraries and the campus.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies.
- Ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion.
Preferred:
- Educational background in the field of Education.
- Strong understanding of the key issues and trends in the design and delivery of library services in support of the academic mission of the university.
- Experience managing or leading projects.
- Formal training or certification in Instructional Design.
