The Position
The City of Carmel-by-the-Sea is seeking a responsible and professional
Local History Librarian II to provide supervisory and specialized support
services for the Local History Department / Archives of the Harrison Memorial
Library. The Local History Librarian II performs a variety of work in support
of the Library Department, and should have the ability to:
- Select and evaluate materials including books, magazines, audio, video, and CD-Rom products; continually weed collection making decisions regarding dated materials and number of copies to retain in collection.
- Supervise and train staff and volunteers in duties related to assigned area of responsibility.
- Instruct patrons and staff in the use of the Library and its resources and equipment.
- Create, organize, and produce local history displays, lecture series, and bibliographies.
- Perform a variety of public relations duties; make public speaking appearances before local groups and organizations; promote Library usage through programming, public relations, outreach, and tours.
- Maintain a variety of records and statistics; conduct research projects as requested; prepare a variety of reports.
- Prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
- Participate on a variety of committees, boards, and task forces; attend and participate in professional group meetings.
- Deal courteously and tactfully with the public in response to inquiries and complaints, provide information regarding rules and regulations.
- Develop, maintain, and preserve the local history collections and archive.
- Coordinate the selection and acquisition of new machinery, equipment, supplies, and technical components. The Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate possesses the following attributes and skills:
- Knowledge of operations, services and activities of a library system including local history services.
- Ability to develop and implement library programs and services applicable to the needs of patrons and the community.
- Ability to assist library patrons in response to reference and related library questions.
- Ability to identify and respond to community, City Administrator, and Board issues, concerns, and needs.
- Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
- Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to life 30 lbs., and load and unload materials.
Education & Experience
Education:
- Equivalent to a Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university.
Experience:
- Two years of responsible professional library experience in Local History / Archives.
