DESCRIPTION:
The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill part-time, "Extra-help" positions in the class of Extra-Help Library Assistant - Spanish/Russian Bilingual at the Library.  "Extra-help" employees are temporarily hired to provide coverage for periods of limited duration, and are paid on an hourly basis.  In order to be considered for this position, candidates must be fluent in English and Spanish or Russian.  This recruitment will close at 5PM on March 8, 2016 OR when 100 applications are received, whichever occurs first. The candidates selected for these positions will support zero to five programs and provide customer service to library patrons at the Yolo County Library branches.  Position responsibilities will include assisting the Youth Services Librarian with planning and implementing the Bilingual storytime, providing Early Literacy education to parents, developing related activities, attending trainings, and participating in outreach activities.  An example of the types of duties that will be performed are as follows:

    Present a weekly bilingual storytime, either in Spanish/English or Russian/English.
    Assist with the development and promotion of bilingual and culturally relevant programs targeting families and their children.
    Register participants for programs and track data as required.
    Assist with designing and implementing age-appropriate art and craft activities to develop motor skills.
    Assist with the creation of promotional materials for literacy programs, in English as well as Spanish and Russian.

The ideal candidate(s) will have a degree or have taken coursework in Early Childhood Education, have an understanding of Early/Emergent Literacy, and have knowledge of the techniques of planning, development, and implementation of programs for children 0-5 years old and their families including selection of storytelling and parenting resource materials.  At least one year of experience working with children ages 0-5 is preferred.

Definition
Under close supervision, performs a variety of routine and repetitive library clerical work; and performs other related duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the entry level of the library paraprofessional series. Positions in this class are characterized by the performance of routine clerical duties requiring discretion and judgment in applying procedures and guidelines. Considerable public contact is involved in the explanation of library services and functions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are typical of those performed by the incumbents in these classifications; however, other duties may also be required.

Circulation:

    Prepares circulation desk for service and checks-out, renews, and checks-in library materials;
    Works at the circulation desk and provides high level customer service;
    Responds to routine questions from patrons; responds to patron complaints and refers difficult problems to appropriate staff person; Issues library cards;
    Assists patrons in requesting books, including inter-library loan;
    Explains library's circulation policies and procedures;
    Shelves library materials numerically and alphabetically;
    Files a variety of items alphabetically;
    Explains the layout of library;
    Prepares books, newspapers and periodicals for circulation;
    Searches shelves and files for requested and overdue materials;
    Receives, receipts, and deposits monies paid for fines and fees and lost or damaged materials;
    Assists with packing, unpacking, and distributing delivery and new book boxes;
    Performs basic troubleshooting of public computers and library equipment.

Technical Services:

    Performs routine database maintenance;
    Process routine inter-library/inter-branch loan requests;
    Prepares and processes routine book orders.

Circulation and Technical Services:

    Processes and routes in-coming and out-going mail;
    Performs outreach and represents the library in the community;
    Provides input into collection development;
    Keeps abreast of library developments by attending workshops and educational programs and reading periodicals and specialized literature;
    Works on improving customer service skills by attending relevant meetings and/or workshops.

This position may also require the performance of different essential or marginal functions depending upon work locations, assignment or shift.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Education: Graduation from high school or possession of G.E.D. certificate.

License

Written Examination
