Job Title:             LIBRARY ASSISTANT II 

Working Title: Arabic Metadata Assistant (AMA) 

Salary: $16.88 - $21.69 hourly

Job Summary Statement:            Reporting to the Arabic and Islamic Catalog Librarian, the Arabic Metadata Assistant (AMA) performs searching Arabic materials to locate cataloging copy, cataloging Arabic materials that have full and complete bibliographic records, minimal record creation, and redirecting/redistributing Arabic materials that do not fit the scope outlined here. The AMA works with print monographs in all disciplines and in Arabic and other languages and in non-Roman and/or Roman script.
1. Ability to use the necessary tools for cataloging materials at the rapid/minimal levels (OCLC, Voyager, LC/ALA transliteration tables, local cataloging documentation)
2. Skill in transcribing Arabic vernacular bibliographic data from printed materials into OCLC records.
3. Ability to process work with a high degree of accuracy.
4. Skill in working with detailed procedures and producing accurate and highly detailed work.
5. Ability to type or keyboard with a high degree of accuracy.
6. Strong reading knowledge of Arabic.
7. Skill in transliterating non-Roman scripts.
8. Ability to read and interpret documents written in standard English, such as departmental procedures, manuals, or memoranda.
9. Good knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of standardized bibliographic description and access.
10. Ability to read and interpret MARC records that follow AACR2 and RDA, OCLC, and local documentation.
11. Ability to understand, code, and create bibliographic, holdings, and item information in conformity with established local and national standards.
12. Ability to analyze problems to formulate effective solutions and determine when assistance is required from supervisor or team leader.
13. Ability to work independently, organizing work according to departmental and Library priorities and monitoring workflow to complete work.
14. Ability to be flexible to changing assignments and priorities.
15. Skill in making appropriate rapid/minicat cataloging decisions, following standard departmental policies and procedures, and existing practices in the Library's online catalog.
16. Good written and oral communication skills.
17. Skill in searching online databases, such as OCLC, local integrated library systems, and a digital collection management system.
18. Ability to follow directions from supervisors (and to provide clear directions to staff and student employees).
19. Ability to get to work reliably and on time and to be present in the workplace during normal working hours.
20. Ability to initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and managers. Ability to work harmoniously and as a team player, thrive in a team-based environment, and skill in fostering teamwork among others.
21. Experience working in an integrated library system.
22. Experience and skill with Internet search engines and employing search strategies to locate and/or identify online resources.
23. Skill in using software applications including Microsoft Word, Windows and Web browsers.
