Under general supervision performs routine and specialized circulation activities involving library materials, files and equipment, using library computer system or technical tasks involved in preparation and/or repair of library collection records and materials.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Library Specialist is a classification found in the Library Division within the Department of Social and Community Services and is distinguished by the performance of a variety of complex clerical and coordinative tasks under minimal supervision. Incumbents are assigned to a particular unit with defined tasks and are required to have a detailed working knowledge of program areas. Significant portion of day may include direct public contact.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Performs all duties required to effectively operate circulation computer such as maintenance activities for hardware and software, telephone communication with computer engineers, interpretation of computer to staff, running and monitoring daily reports, library-wide supervision of computer downtime activity, building and maintaining required computer records and files.
Performs routine circulation tasks required to serve public such as registering and updating files of borrowers; interpreting status of patron accounts, checking in and out library materials via computerized equipment, accepting payments for fines, bills, fees, assisting patrons with inquiries regarding availability and status of items in collections, and assisting users regarding circulation services.
Collects, records, tabulates and deposits monies received daily from all library facilities, complying with cash handling procedures.
Under direction of supervisor, develops, organizes and monitors procedures for circulation of all collections and maintenance of library equipment.
 Essential Functions:
Maintains up-to-date reservations system including (coordinating requests city-wide,) utilizing the library computer as appropriate.
Monitors total overdue processes.
Schedules, trains, and coordinates work of clerical, temporary and volunteer staff in variety of routines.
Coordinates daily processing activities.
Responsible for the manual preparation of all materials for circulation. Uses specialized tools and equipment to prepare materials for public use.
Responsible for the manual preparation and restoration of all items needing repair, including book and non-book items using specialized tools and equipment to re-back, rebind, recover, re-glue, relabel, resew, laminate and otherwise repair materials for public use.
Responsible for manual preparation, preservation, and restoration of valuable, historical materials in the library collection.
Builds and maintains on-line computer files of bibliographic data for all new items. - Gathers and compiles statistical data.
Related Functions:
Selects, orders, and maintains supplies. Interacts directly with vendors to resolve ordering problems.
May serve on library, City or cooperative library system committees.
May select and deselect materials in a limited area.
Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
High school diploma or equivalent. and
Two years of work experience.
