The Marin County Human Resources Department and the Marin County Free Library (MCFL) are announcing a recruitment for the position of Librarian I.

CURRENT VACANCY:

There are currently two (2) part time Librarian I vacancies.  One is a 26 hour per pay period Teen Librarian position at the Civic Center branch in San Rafael and the other is a 40 hour per pay period Adult Reference Librarian position at the Corte Madera branch.  The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancies and any future Librarian I vacancies that may occur while the list remains active.  Eligible lists remain active for a minimum of six months. THE POSITION(S):

• The Teen Services Librarian reports to the Librarian II and is responsible for maintaining the teen collection, programming and outreach services for young adults aged 12 to 18 years of age.  This position is based in San Rafael at the Civic Center branch located on the 4th floor of the Marin County Civic Center, an historic building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
• The Adult Reference Librarian at the Corte Madera branch reports to the Librarian II, Adult Services, and provides professional library services such as reference, research assistance and instruction, including information literacy, reader’s advisory, outreach to the community about library services, support for branch programming, and materials management to meet the general information needs of the public. The Corte Madera branch is a busy and dynamic branch with a very loyal patron base, serving residents from communities throughout central Marin County.

These positions provide the opportunity to seek innovative ways to connect with patrons to enhance their experiences in the library.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE(S):

• The ideal candidate for the Teen Librarian position is passionate about providing excellent library services to young adults (typically 12 to 18) with an emphasis on programming, outreach and reader’s advisory.  The candidate must be able to communicate effectively, collaborate with colleagues and community partners, and demonstrate the ability to work in a single-point-of-service environment.  Public library experience; experience working with young adults from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds; knowledge of social media platforms; knowledge of current teen and library trends and young adult literature are highly desirable.
• The ideal candidate for the Adult Reference Librarian position is an energetic and creative self-starter, has a positive outlook, is flexible and open to change, is conversant with technology and enjoys working collaboratively to meet the information needs of the public with an excellent level of customer service.  He/she is dedicated to fostering discovery and growth through the library, connecting people with books and ideas using displays, reader’s advisory, creating experiences that educate and illuminate, and communicating through the library’s web site and social media. The Corte Madera branch will be operating a single-point-of-service model and the ideal candidate strives to support and build successful relationships with their colleagues at all levels and thrives working in a diverse, fast-paced environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Equivalent to an American Library Association approved Master’s degree in Library Science, Library and Information Services or similar curriculum. Course work in the area of service specialization is desirable.

TENTATIVE EXAM SCHEDULE: 

Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination process may consist of a highly qualified review, supplemental application screening, online assessment, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates’ names will be placed on the eligible list.

Must be willing to work evenings, weekends and at any branch as assigned.
