SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES
Under the general direction of the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services,
and working closely with the other original catalogers, the Original
Cataloger/Copy-Cataloging Team Leader is responsible for supervising and
directing the work of the Library's copy-cataloging staff. This individual
ensures quality of records brought into Pegasus for monograph titles based
on local and national productivity and efficiency and monitors the accuracy
and quality of cataloging and metadata records imported. In close
collaboration with other catalogers and the Metadata Management/Catalog
Librarian, this individual provides original cataloging records and NACO
authority records for Library materials, performs related database
management duties as needed, and serves as a facilitator of
copy-cataloging-related trainings within the department.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
·      3 years experience of original and complex adaptive cataloging in all
formats in an academic library
·      Demonstrated proficiency using automated library systems, AACR2, RDA,
LCRI, LCSH, LCC, MARC21 formats, and OCLC
·      Ability to work independently and collaboratively, prioritizing work
to ensure that departmental and library goals are realized
·      Excellent interpersonal skills and leadership abilities to
effectively motivate and influence others
·      Supervisory experience of establishing employee goals and the ability
to measure effectiveness of contributions
·      Experienced in training catalogers and writing cataloging
documentation

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
·      Reading knowledge of at least one Western European language
·      Experience with NACO program

Cataloging and Metadata Services supports user access to library resources in multiple ways:

Provides cataloging and metadata for general, special, and digital collections, including art, government publications, music, media, and UCSB dissertations in all subject areas, in many languages, and in various formats

Provides consistent forms of names, titles, and subjects to bring related works and concepts together in the catalog (authority control)

Maintains the catalog, correcting catalog errors, adding copies and volumes, and synchronizing the UCSB catalog with Melvyl (the all-UC catalog)

Maintains the collection, adding and withdrawing copies and volumes, transferring materials to the Southern Regional Library Facility (SRLF)

Coordinates cataloging and metadata standards, policies, and procedures with local, UC systemwide, and national requirements

Provides quality control for all monographic copy cataloging in Western European languages.

Serves as an expert resource in copy-cataloging; responds to questions regarding authority control problems posed by catalogers and other library personnel. Resolves complex cataloging problems

Submits an annual report on the work of the unit to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata Services.

Keeps monthly statistics of unit activities.

Directs the processing and addition to collection of monographic added volumes, replacements and reinstatements for all collections and divisional libraries except the East Asian Collection. Includes analytic cataloging and the establishment of bibliographic headings new to PEGASUS.

Interprets, resolves and directs the work of database maintenance staff on complex monographic record discrepancies reported by other library staff members, patrons and other institutions. Includes online correction of bibliographic, holdings and item records in PEGASUS, and routing of materials for re-labeling.

Uses system-generated reports to identify conflicts between bibliographic and authority records as necessary, including use of Global Update Function in PEGASUS to correct large number of headings.
