LIBRARIAN II (EXAM# 142410-01). City of Santa Monica, CA. An eligible list will be established from those who pass the examination process in the areas of Children’s, Information Management, Latino Outreach, Public Services, Reference and Teen Services. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The current vacancy is for one full-time professional, supervisory librarian in Children’s Services.

Santa Monica Public Library: Serves the City of Santa Monica (pop. 92,185) and surrounding Los Angeles area communities. With the opening of the new Pico Branch in 2014, the Library operates five library facilities in 8.3 square miles. The 104,000 square-foot Main Library has a strong civic presence in the downtown, and the branch libraries are located in diverse, residential neighborhoods with lively commercial districts nearby. The Library has received a top, five-star rating from the LJ Index of Public Library Service for the past four, consecutive years. The City is strongly committed to education and to its municipal library system that offers exceptional collections, online resources, services and programs. The Library has new leadership, and its organizational culture is responsive to new ideas and encourages staff development at all levels. The Library has budgeted FTE staff of 114.8, including 36.5 permanent librarians and is supported by a total budget of $12.3 million for FY 2014-15.

Job Summary: the Librarian II (Children’s Services) supervises services for babies, preschoolers and elementary school-aged youth at the Main Library; supervises professional staff; schedules the youth reference desk; monitors budget expenditures; manages the children’s summer reading program system-wide; maintains expertise in youth services trends and in children’s literature for collection development and readers’ advisory; collaborates with schools, city and community partners for outreach on children’s and family services. NOTE:  Librarian II positions may be required to work evenings and weekends.

Requires: Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited college or university. Two years of recent, paid work experience performing a variety of professional librarian duties in an area of specialized experience such as adult services, technical services, youth services, reference services in a public library. One year of the required library experience, including leading and/or coordinating the work of others and bilingual skills, is desirable. Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid Class C driver license.
