Adult Reference Department

$17.32 - $21.07/hour (DOQ)

THE POSITION
Under the direct supervision of the Librarian IV, performs a variety of paraprofessional
library work. As the second level in this series, performs clerical duties and routine library
tasks in support of daily operations as assigned and assists other library staff in providing
services and programs to the community.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • The City is seeking an individual with the following professional capabilities:
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory to the public.
  • Responds to inquiries and refers patrons (in person and/or on the phone) to appropriate library personnel for requested services/information.
  • Assists library patrons in the use of the library facility and with other directional information.
  • Assists Library staff in planning and preparing for library programs and events through the preparation of stories, crafts, arranging displays, bulletin boards and posters and setting-up and cleaning-up before and after events.
  • Creates flyers, bookmarks, posters and other promotional materials.
  • Prepares clerical worksite for opening and closing.
  • Processes new materials in all formats, including copying and pasting DVD and CD graphics for covers.
  • Assists in mending all formats of materials, including the routine cleaning of DVD and CD discs.
  • Assists with general maintenance of office equipment such as, replacing toner cartridges, paper and cleaning glass surfaces.
  • Assists customer with use of library equipment such as, copy machines, selfcheck, microform reader printers and computers and printers.
  • Maintains public brochure materials to assure currency, Library policy relevance and neatness.
  • Checks in all formats of returned materials using the Library automated system.
  • Checks-out all formats of materials to library patrons using the Library’s automated system.
  • Repeatedly retrieves daily “holds” materials from the shelves, changes their status code and processes for the “holds” shelf.
  • Calculates and collects fines and fees from library patrons.
  • Registers new library users and advises them of library policies and procedures.
  • Assists Library staff on special projects as assigned.
  • Shares the responsibility with all Library staff of maintaining the Library as a safe and welcoming place for all.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
  • Standard office methods and procedures, including fundamental record keeping methods;
  • Standard terminology and practices related to library work;
  • Dewey Decimal system; operations of a variety of office equipment, including computers, software applications and related hardware use;
  • Basic arithmetic and rules of English grammar and spelling; effective public relations skills;
  • Basic information resources in print, audiovisual and computerized formats.

Ability to:
  • Be self-motivated, perform clerical work involving the use of computers, software applications and standard office equipment; maintain accurate records and files in alphabetical and numerical order; read, understand, perform, and explain to others oral and written instructions, directives, policies and procedures;
  • Deal courteously and tactfully with the library patrons, including the ability to work effectively with difficult customer interactions; make independent decisions or judgments based on appropriate information;
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of individuals representing diverse cultures and backgrounds; perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another or different nature without loss of efficiency or composure; provide prompt, efficient, and responsive service to library patrons; work effectively and have good interpersonal relations with public, volunteers and City and Library staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education: 
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent. An Associate’s degree from an accredited institution with coursework in Library Technology or Library Science is desirable.

Experience: 
  • Two years of experience in a library setting, including patron contact and library computer systems is required. Work experience in a public library is desirable.
  • Or any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends;
  • Successful completion of an extensive background investigation and a preemployment
  • Physical with drug screen are required.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a Class C California driver license and a satisfactory driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Continuous walking; lifting objects weighing up to 35lbs from below the waist to above shoulder level and transporting such weight in distances from 1 yard up to 500 yards.
