Reports To:  Various Library Managers or Supervisors

Supervises:   Non-supervisory; may mentor, coordinate and assign work to professional, paraprofessional, clerical, temporary and/or volunter staff

 Palo Alto City Library is looking for an experienced, energetic, Youth Librarian who is knowledgeable about current trends and emerging technologies and their application to the public library environment.  The ability to work closely and communicate effectively with customers of all ages and staff at all levels is essential.

 This position will be based at the newly renovated Rinconada Branch Library and work with all the children’s and teen librarians throughout the system.  Responsibilities will include outreach to schools and the community and working collaboratively with staff to develop programming that supports the 41 Developmental Assets.

Purpose of Classification
Independently performs specialized and professional library activities of advanced difficulty in a library.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:
  • College degree or a combination of related experience and training substantially equivalent to graduation from a college or university; and
  • Three years professional experience as a librarian. Master's degree in Library or Information Science may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
Distinguishing Characteristics
  • The Senior Librarian is the advanced professional classification within the Library Division. Incumbents have professional experience to perform high level public library responsibilities. It is a broad classification which covers a variety of work situations including advanced knowledge of reference services, facility operation, collection management, library policies and computerized information systems. Significant portion of the day may include direct public contact.

Essential Duties:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Responsible for selection and deselection of library materials in one or more subject areas on a rotating basis, chairs large selection area committee, serves on library wide materials order review committee and participates on materials weeding team. Evaluates need to add-to or retain in materials collection based on variety of criteria; verifies and evaluates patron requests for purchases; responsible for daily collection maintenance and evaluation; coordinates processing of discarded materials.
  • Develops, organizes, and maintains variety of up-to-date collections (such as reference resource files and government document files) not cataloged in usual manner.
  • Monitors physical arrangements and other requirements relevant to collection size and promotion of specific areas/collections in the library. Monitors maintenance requirements for and assists public in use of a variety of library equipment including COM readers, microfilm reader printers and photocopiers, and computers.
  • Essential Functions:
  • Recruits, interviews, schedules, trains, initiates and coordinates work of regular, temporary and volunteer staff as assigned; assumes responsibility of unit.
  •  Responsible for security of building and safety of patrons and staff.
  •  Performs copy and original cataloging and classification efficiently utilizing an on-line computerized cataloging system; assigns access points for materials; establishes new bibliographic computer records in accordance with recognized standards; handles special services such as transfers; monitors variety of selection maintenance activities.
  • Responsible for all elements of library programming including planning, coordination, promotion and conducting of programs. Cooperates with other City departments, community and library groups in co-sponsorship of programs.
  • Conducts reference interviews, analyzes, interprets and answers inquiries at all level of complexity utilizing resources in Palo Alto Libraries as well as other libraries and in the community, when required to meet public information needs; keeps informed of new and outdated resources; provides direct assistance to patrons of all ages in location and selection of appropriate library materials and may specialize in service to children; assists patrons in use of facility, materials and access tools.
  • Related Functions: - Coordinates system-wide library committees and may serve on City or library system committees.
  • Handles sensitive personal contact with library patrons relative to information needs or library services; refers to supervisor when necessary.
  • May perform duties of Librarian as required.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Ideal Candidate:
  • The ideal candidate will have a MLIS degree, a thorough knowledge of technology and social media and enjoy taking on new challenges.
  • Experience with collaborating with public schools is desired.  The successful candidate should have an extensive knowledge of youth literature, resources and current library trends.
Hours:
Tuesday through Saturday with some evenings and Sundays required.
