Brief Job Description
Due to the growing reliance on digital resources for
scholarly research and communication, the CSUEB Libraries' web services have
become increasingly complex and sophisticated. The purpose of this position is
to upgrade and manage the library's expanding web presence. Under the direction
of the Web Services Librarian, the Web Developer maintains the different online
systems employed by the library, including the library website, the online
subject guides, and various interfaces that connect patrons to the e-journals,
e-books, streaming media, and online databases provided by the CSUEB libraries.
In consultation with the Web Services Librarian and the
Library User Experience (UX) Committee, the Web Developer creates an
attractive, seamless, and user-friendly digital branch library that makes it
easy for students and faculty to discover the wide range of services and
resources provided by the library both on and off campus. The Web Developer
provides the technical expertise to implement the vision of seamless patron
service developed by the Web Services Librarian and the UX Committee.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In collaboration with the Web Services Librarian, design, develop and launch an updated library website. Resolve day-to-day issues with the library website and make sure that the content stays up-to-date.
- Train and assist content providers on using the library's Content Management System (CMS).
- Troubleshoot errors and problems with the CMS and research effective solutions.
- Evaluate alternatives to the library's current CMS and configure and install appropriate alternatives.
- Maintain and update the library web server software.
- In consultation with the Web Services Librarian, upgrade the mobile version of the library website using the principles of Responsive Web Design and Adaptive Web Design.
- Monitor trends and developments in library web design and keep CSUEB at the cutting edge in deploying new web technologies.
- Maintain the site search engine and make sure that the results are relevant and precise for users.
- Work effectively with Campus IT to make sure that the library site is accessible and responsive 24/7.
- Maintain statistics on the library website and share with the Web Services Librarian, Assessment Librarian, and Library Management.
- Ensure that the library website meets web accessibility standards as required by the "U.S. Rehabilitation Act," Section 508 and the "Americans with Disabilities Act."
- Maintain the LibGuides CMS used by the subject guides.
- Create and maintain LibGuides user accounts.
- Provide training and assistance to LibGuides authors.
- Maintain the LibGuides settings and integrate the LibGuides effectively into the library and campus website.
- Work with Systems Librarian to ensure that Ezproxy, the library Discovery system and catalog are performing optimally.
- Perform maintenance on Ezproxy, such as host maintenance and database configuration.
- Resolve day-to-day issues with Ezproxy and troubleshoot errors and problems.
- Work with the Assessment Librarian on analyzing usage patterns for Ezproxy.
- Work with the Library Archivist to improve the interface for the library's Dspace Institutional Repository and integrate it effectively into the library website.
- Configure the library Discovery system and catalog to maintain the look and feel and the "brand" of the library on all digital library services.
- Effectively integrate the Discovery system into the library website.
- Explore options for integrating library resources into the Campus Learning Management System.
- Participate in related committees (including the UX Committee), working groups, and task forces as needed.
- Under the direction of the Web Services Librarian, implement emerging technologies in support of library patrons.
- Conduct usability tests on library web services in collaboration with the Web Services Librarian and the UX Committee.
- Implement other digital projects as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
- Knowledge of web content management systems.
- Knowledge of User Interface Design and Web Usability.
- Demonstrated experience in maintaining and designing websites.
- Knowledge of Web Accessibility standards and the ability to create accessible web services.
- General knowledge of network connectivity, integration, configuration, and protocols.
- Ability to research and evaluate the functionality of vendor software to meet user needs, assess vendor proposals, and serve as a technical/vendor liaison.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to be able to prepare internal library reports and written and visual presentations on website development resources and present them to library staff.
- Ability to assess user needs and communicate technology systems and solutions regarding user needs in library website development.
- Strong organizational skills to oversee and lead work flow in website-related services.
- Ability to investigate and research complex problems, including analyzing and interpreting vendor documentation and other sources of information.
- Ability to work effectively on teams.
- Ability to learn and apply policies and procedures related to library's website.
- Ability to work within a diverse environment and to be service-oriented in working with patrons and library staff, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the library.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Three years of website development experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Experience with content management systems including installation, configuration and upgrades.
- Experience with web server software such as Apache.
- Experience with relational databases such as MySQL, the ability to formulate queries and manage the database.
- Experience with Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and the ability to create end user services based on vendor supplied APIs.
- Knowledge of web scripting languages such as Perl or Python.
- Knowledge and experience with the OpenURL protocol and OAI-PMH.
- Thorough knowledge of institutional standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to interpret and apply them to ensure compliance.
- Ability to use project management tools.
- Knowledge of the library's policies and practices associated with the ethical use of web resources and the ability to interpret and implement those policies.
